‘ENTWINED’ AT TITLED GALLERY, COPENHAGEN, 2024
Maria Koshenkova transforms the compact gallery space into a densely packed environment using coloured ropes suspended from the ceiling. These ropes create a structure that guides visitors through the space. Supported by Nørrebro Lokaludvalg. Photo by Alen Aligrudic & Kurt Hoppe.
Obscured by a veil of ropes, Koshenkova nestles a delicate glass sculpture. This piece is not immediately visible and draws attention as visitors move through the installation. The placement of the sculpture, combined with the density of the ropes, parallels the internal structures of the human body. The glass sculpture is a metaphor for a living organism, a uterine structure suggesting the pre-nascent state of an undeveloped embryo. At the same time, the installation resembles a spider’s web with a body of prey trapped within, the organic forms of the sculpture suggesting flesh, veins and guts. This duality underscores the work’s meditation on the cycle of life and death, creation and decay, where birth and violence coexist in a delicate balance
The installation also includes a site-specific charcoal drawing on one of the walls. This drawing acts as a focal point, echoing the liana-like forms of the ropes. It highlights the rhythmic, fluid structure that resonates with organic growth patterns and the chaotic vitality of a living ecosystem. Entwined seeks to create a sensory experience that transcends the visual.
